Most of what goes in a bike cleaning kit is already in your shed: a bucket, a sponge, an old toothbrush and some rags. What you can't improvise is a cleaner that lifts road muck, a chain degreaser, a lube to put back on and a cloth that never touches the brakes.
Put those together once and a full wash takes 20 to 30 minutes. On an e-bike the kit is almost the same; it's the method that changes.

The short version: a good bike cleaning kit holds a foam bike cleaner such as Ballistol Bicycle Cleaner, a chain degreaser, a chain lube that suits the weather, a soft brush, a stiff drivetrain brush, a bucket, a sponge and a separate clean cloth kept only for the brakes. Leave out the pressure washer, especially for an e-bike.
| Quick facts | |

What goes in a bike cleaning kit?
A bike cleaning kit needs three products and a handful of tools: a frame cleaner, a chain degreaser and a chain lube, plus brushes of two stiffnesses, a bucket, a sponge and clean rags.
- Frame and wheel cleaner. Ballistol Bicycle Cleaner is a foam for the whole bike, chain included. It contains no silicone, acids or hydrocarbons and leaves no residue on aluminium, chrome or anodised parts.
- Chain degreaser. Ballistol Chain Cleaner strips old lube from the chain and cassette and doesn't attack paint, aluminium, plastics, rubber or carbon.
- Chain lube. A wet lube from October to April, a dry one for summer.
- Brushes. A soft one for the frame and a stiff one (an old toothbrush works) for the chain, jockey wheels and cassette.
- Rags and gloves. At least three clean cloths, one kept only for the brakes, and nitrile gloves.
A mountain bike cleaning kit needs more water and a bigger brush for clay in the suspension linkage. A road bike cleaning kit can be smaller, but keep the drivetrain brush. Buying one as a Christmas present? Our Winter Bike Kit puts Chain Cleaner, Bike X Lube and Bicycle Cleaner together, and the Summer Bike Kit swaps the wet lube for DryLube.
Which cleaner or lube for which job?
Each product in a bike cleaning kit does one job, and mixing them up is how chains end up dry or brakes end up oily.
| Job | Product | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Washing frame, wheels and drivetrain | Bicycle Cleaner | Foam shifts dried-on mud, grease and oil from tight spots |
| Stripping old lube from chain and cassette | Chain Cleaner | Works between the links and contains rust protection additives |
| Chain lube for wet UK riding | Bike X Lube | Repels water and resists salt water |
| Dry roads, forks and dropper posts | Bike DryLube | PTFE film that dust doesn't stick to |
The full range is in our bike and e-bike care collection, and the bike chain lube guide covers wet versus dry lube in more depth.
What changes in an e-bike cleaning kit?
An e-bike cleaning kit uses the same cleaner, degreaser and lube as an ordinary bike, but water and spray must stay away from the motor, battery contacts, display and connectors. The one thing to remove from the kit entirely is the pressure washer.
Switch the e-bike off and take the battery out if the maker allows it, then cover the frame contacts with a dry cloth. Brush foam gently around the motor rather than spraying into it, and dry the contacts before refitting the battery.
The motor puts extra torque through an e-bike chain, so it wears faster. In winter, check it after every couple of rides. Bike X Lube suits everyday commuting; if a mid-drive chain dries out quickly, E-Bike Chain Oil is made to hold its film under motor torque.
Look over the battery and charger while the bike is clean. The government's battery safety advice for e-cycle users explains what damage to look for and how to charge safely.
How to use a bike cleaning kit step by step
Use a bike cleaning kit from the top down with the chain first, so grime from the drivetrain doesn't land on a clean frame. Allow 20 to 30 minutes plus drying time.
- Work outside or with the garage door open. On an e-bike, switch off and remove the battery where the maker allows.
- Fold your brake cloth over each disc rotor.
- Rinse off loose mud gently. Never pressure wash the hubs, bottom bracket, headset or any part of an e-bike.
- Spray Chain Cleaner on the lower run of the chain while you backpedal, wait 1 to 2 minutes, then scrub the chain, jockey wheels and cassette.
- Foam the frame, fork and wheels with Bicycle Cleaner and leave it a minute or two.
- Brush from the top down, rinse with clean water, dry with rags and leave the bike somewhere warm for about 30 minutes.
- Lube the dry chain on the lower run while backpedalling, wait 5 minutes and wipe the outside of the chain.

Why does a bike cleaning kit need a separate brake cloth?
A separate brake cloth matters because a trace of chain lube or degreaser on a disc rotor or pad makes the brakes squeal and lose grip, and an oil-soaked pad usually has to be replaced. One marked cloth kept only for the brakes is the cheapest insurance in the kit.
Cover the rotors with it while you work on the chain, give them a final wipe once the bike is dry, and wash the cloth on its own. Kitchen degreasers don't belong in the kit: they are hard to keep off pads.
How often should you clean a bike in a UK winter?
In a UK winter, clean a bike after every ride on wet, gritted roads, or at least weekly if you commute daily. Road salt left on a chain overnight can start orange rust on the rollers by morning. No time for a full wash? Rinse, dry and re-lube the chain.
Laying the bike up for a few weeks? After the last wash, mist Ballistol Universal Oil onto bolts and cable ends, keeping it off the brakes. It's made in Germany by F.W. Klever GmbH, as Ballistol has been since 1904. Our guide to stopping rust on metal covers storage in a damp shed.
How can you tell your bike cleaning kit is doing its job?
A bike cleaning kit is doing its job when the chain looks silver rather than black after a wash, shifts quietly and leaves no black line when you run a finger along it.
If the brakes squeal or feel weak afterwards, oil has reached the rotors or pads: clean the rotors with a fresh cloth and have contaminated pads replaced. A chain that squeaks within a ride or two is dry and needs lube, not more cleaning.
Questions people ask
Can you pressure wash an e-bike? No, you should not pressure wash an e-bike, because the jet can force water past the seals into the motor, battery connections and bearings. Use a foam cleaner, a soft brush and a gentle flow of water from a watering can or low-pressure hose instead.
How often should you clean your bike in winter? Clean a bike after every ride on salted or muddy UK roads in winter, or at least once a week if you commute daily. Salt left on the chain and bolts overnight starts rust quickly, so rinse it off the same day.
Do you need a chain cleaner as well as a bike cleaner? A separate chain cleaner is worth having because it strips old oil from inside the chain and cassette, which a general bike cleaner only partly shifts. Use the bike cleaner for the frame and wheels and the chain cleaner for the drivetrain.
What should you put on a bike chain after washing it? Put chain lube on a bike chain the same day you wash it, once the chain is dry, because washing strips the oil that keeps rust off. A wet lube suits UK winter riding and a dry PTFE lube suits dry summer roads.
What is the difference between a bike cleaning kit and a bike maintenance kit? A bike cleaning kit holds cleaners, degreaser, lube and brushes for washing a bike, while a bike maintenance kit adds tools such as Allen keys, a chain checker, tyre levers and grease. Most riders use the cleaning kit weekly and the maintenance kit a few times a year.
