Ballistol Quick Blueing is a liquid cold bluing solution for steel gun parts. It blues at room temperature with no tanks or heat, and is used to touch up worn edges, screws, scratches and small parts, or to re-blue a small part completely.
It turns bare steel a deep blue and leaves a protective finish that helps prevent rust. It works on rifles, shotguns, handguns and older guns, so it is handy for restoration as well as routine touch-ups.
What it's for
- Touching up worn edges, scratches and screws
- Re-bluing small parts
- Barrels, actions, receivers and other steel components
- Restoring the look of older guns
How to use
- Degrease the steel thoroughly with Cold Degreaser. Any oil or fingerprint shows up as a patch.
- Remove any rust with fine steel wool, then degrease again.
- Apply the bluing liquid evenly with a clean cloth, applicator or cotton bud.
- Leave it to react, then wipe off the excess. Repeat for a darker finish.
- Rinse or wipe clean and seal the blued metal with Ballistol oil. The oil stops the reaction and protects the finish.
Wear gloves and work in a well ventilated space. Full instructions are in our guide to how to cold blue a gun.

Good to know
- Made for carbon steel. The chromium in stainless steel resists cold bluing, so results on stainless tend to be patchy
- Not designed to remove heavy rust or pitting. Deal with those first
- Cold bluing is for touch-ups and small parts. A full hot blue from a gunsmith is harder wearing
- Test on a hidden spot before doing a whole part
